I knew this brookie would grab your attention! |
Cold weather had kept me off the river for too long so when I saw an opening in the weather I knew I needed to get out. The temperature was 35 when James and I arrived at Junction Pool and the with sun filtering in through the trees.
The water level was perfect and as I checked out the deep pool to the left of the rock at 3-oclock I saw trout finning in the shady-depths. James and I decided to walk down to the ford pool and fish back up to the jeep. We rigged up with light rods and dry-dropper tandems in hopes that the warm sun would warm up the top layer, promote a hatch and feeding. We were wrong. The surface water temp at the ford was 34 degrees and even though I saw trout in the pools as I walked they were conserving energy in deep holes and very docile. After trying all manner of combinations I finally landed on a tandem bead head nymph-dropper rig fished without an indicator in order to plumb the depths. I caught the this beautiful brookie in a a +5' deep hole and for the remainder of the day only had 2 other firm strikes.

Meaty Brookie from a deep pool |
James had similar fortune and this sparkling brookie put a great smile on his face....its so true that one trout is infinitely better than no trout!

Water never warmed enough to promote a hatch |
